Memphis is the most-populous city in Tennessee, and the largest city situated on the Mississippi river. One thing it's known for is its strong musical culture, especially when it comes to rock and roll and blues. In fact, Elvis Presley, often called The King of Rock and Roll, spent both his formative and final years in Memphis. You can still visit the Graceland Mansion, Presley's home, for a walking tour. But The King wasn't the only icon to call Memphis home - many of the world's biggest artists, including B.B. King, Otis Redding, Jerry Lee Lewis and Justin Timberlake, were either born in, lived in, or recorded in Memphis. Today, Memphis is home to a growing hip-hop movement.

Another staple of Memphis is its barbecue. Each region of the United States has its own unique take on barbecue, and Memphis is no exception. Restaurants such as Leonard's Pit and Central BBQ have been serving up Tennessee-style barbecue for years, specializing in all things pork - including pulled pork sandwiches and pork shoulder in a tomato-based sauce and a selection of dry and wet (with and without sauce) ribs. But the city's love for all things pork-based and slathered in sauce has created a bigger platform for barbecue; each year, hundreds of contestants and hungry spectators gather in Tom Lee Park for the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. This competition goes beyond crowning the best barbecue of Memphis, as pit pros come from all over the country to put their skills to the test against the best in the business.
