The city of Lincoln, Nebraska was founded as Lancaster in 1867. The capital of the state was moved here in a political move to keep southern counties from joining the state of Kansas. The capital was moved from Omaha shortly after Nebraska became an official state in 1867. The city now has almost 300,000 people.
