Quite a bit of the city of Norfolk is made up of people who work at the naval base and in supportive roles for it. However, the city has much more to offer than that. It's also the Port of Virginia, bringing in vessels from around the world. The Elizabeth River is home to some of the best boating in the area as well. Norfolk boasts some of the largest and most beautiful parks in the area, including Town Point Park in the downtown area, where events happen each year.
In addition to this, there are both public and private colleges located in the area, including Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Norfolk State University. Virginia Wesleyan College is a smaller, private school here as well.
Norfolk is easy to get to with its large transportation system, including Interstate 64 and Route 58. US Route 60 runs along the waterfront. This allows many to commute into the city for work or entertainment. Some of the largest employers here include the Norfolk City Public Schools, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the city of Norfolk itself.
In addition to this, Norfolk has a large range of medical providers and hospitals, including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, and Sentara Leigh Hospital. Because of its location near the naval base, the city has a strong healthcare industry present.
Residents who live in the Downtown area live in an urban waterfront area. They are close to historical attractions, waterfront views, and direct access to the water itself. It's a trendy place to call home. The Freemason district is the oldest neighborhood in the area and is home to estates and stunning custom homes all along tree-lined cobblestone streets.
Ghent is full of character and charm, especially along Colley Avenue and 21st Street, where there are numerous art galleries. Chelsea is a smaller neighborhood, but it is also one of the best for those seeking a walkable place to live, thanks to its location on the Elizabeth River. Yet another stunning community here is Riverview. It's a few minutes from Ghent but is one of the best for those who love nature and want everything from zoos to fabulous restaurants within a short drive of their home.
